Student Teaching

Elementary and secondary candidates student teach during the fall semester Senior Year and attend a weekly seminar. Music Education students may student teach during the fall or spring semester Senior Year.  A ninth semester option at reduced tuition is available to all candidates who qualify through an application process, except those participating in the Chicago Semester Program. (Please email the Director of Teacher Education for details.)

Student teachers are placed in Bloomington-Normal and communities within a 60 mile radius. Student teachers are responsible for their own transportation and any concurrent expenses. Candidates are not placed in a previously attended elementary or secondary school, or in a school where a relative is currently employed. There is an option for student teaching in Chicago through the Chicago Semester program. Applications for the Chicago Semester are due in January of the Junior Year.

Candidates for student teaching must meet all requirements specified in the TEP handbook including passing the content exam before student teaching begins and any state or IWU required assessment during student teaching.  The policies, procedures, and responsibilities for everyone involved in the student teaching experience are detailed in the Student Teaching Handbook.

Standards and Program Requirements

Illinois Wesleyan University teacher candidates provide evidence of meeting the Illinois Professional Educator Standards (IPES) and the Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards (CRTL) throughout their professional education and major coursework.

The Illinois Learning Standards establish expectations for what all students should know and be able to do in each subject at each grade.
