Cristina Almeida is passionate about the transformative power of language learning
and designs interactive, multimodal courses that foster connection, experimentation,
and confidence in additional languages. She teaches Spanish and French in the Basic
Sequence (101, 102, and 201), creating flexible learning environments to maximize
access and engagement.
Her work centers on applied linguistics, project-based and experiential learning, intercultural programming, less commonly taught languages, and technology- enhanced language acquisition. She integrates immersive practices and digital tools to promote authentic communication and meaningful engagement.
As Language Resource Center (LRC) Coordinator, Cristina has reimagined the center as a dynamic hub for experiential learning, cultural exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community building. She has implemented virtual reality (VR) immersion programs across languages (except ASL), enabling students to engage in real-time conversations in authentic global contexts. She has also developed virtual exchange partnerships for French 102 and 201 and continues to expand the integration of VR into hybrid beginner Spanish courses.
In collaboration with Prof. Nadeau, she developed the May Term travel course to Ecuador, A Journey of Language and Culture. Drawing on her background in ecotourism and sustainability, Cristina incorporates environmental awareness into language instruction while promoting intercultural competence and an appreciation for indigenous, endangered, and less commonly taught languages.
