Fiji 150th Anniversary Celebration

IWU's Phi Gamma Delta chapter was not only the first fraternity at Illinois Wesleyan, but it was also the first chapter of a Greek letter society chartered in the entire state of Illinois. "Development of a Social Conscience"

A panel of 1960's and 1970's student activists, Eldridge "Skip" Gilbert '67; Mary Harris Melchor '70; Richard Muirhead '66; Wenona Whitfield '70, will discuss the impact of the 1966 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. visit to campus and the events that led up to his visit. They will also reflect on how this period in IWU history shaped their own social consciences and their lives.

Diana Hammer Tscheschlok ’01 - 2016 Outstanding Young Alumna - "Making Meetings More Meaningful"

In her work as Community, Natural Resource, & Economic Development Educator, Diana equips residents and community leaders with the knowledge and process skills to make informed decisions and meet challenges productively. Increasingly collaborative work environments promise more team work and better results, but wanting to work together effectively and knowing how are two different things. In this session we'll practice approaches developed by national thought leaders in business, community building, and facilitation to transform the quality of connections, leadership, and decisions in all your gatherings. Use these methods to spark positive change in your workplace, congregation, family and self.

In May 1966, R. Sargent Shriver, Jr. addressed the IWU graduating class about his tenure as the first Director of the Peace Corps. Captain Ryan A. Beaupre '95 Memorial Scholarship 5K Run /2 Mile Walk

A United States Marine Corps Captain: Ryan was a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter pilot and was the first American to give the ultimate sacrifice for his country in "Operation Iraqi Freedom." Join us to run the 5K one last time as we celebrate his legacy and celebrate the history and success of this event and the scholarship in Ryan's name.

The 5K Run/2 Mile Walk starts on the IWU track at Tucci Stadium and ends at Egbers Quadrangle. Packet pick-up and walkup registration at 7-7:45 a.m.  Participants are welcome to stay and enjoy the pancake/sausage breakfast on the quad.

Denny Matthews '66- 2016 Distinguished Alumnus - "From Fell Avenue Playground to Cooperstown"

Broadcaster Denny Matthews, the "voice" of the Kansas City Royals, will tell the stories of how his days at Illinois Wesleyan led to 48 years of broadcasting in Major League Baseball and to his 2007 induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Professor of the Year Scott Sheridan - "Heroes on Film:  Dynamics of National Identity and The History of Italian Cinema"

Using short clips, participants will be exposed to the great moments of Italian Neorealism.  We will discuss how the Italian film industry attempted to rebuild its self-image in the years following WWII and how it differed from the American film industry.  Films to be examined briefly will include Rome, Open City (1945, Roberto Rossellini) and Bicycle Thieves (1948, Vittorio De Sica), among others.  All clips will be shown with English subtitles.

Over 1200 trees grace the grounds of Illinois Wesleyan Arboretum, comprised of nearly 150 distinct species and cultivars. When trying to distinguish each from its neighbor, one might be reminded of the old adage…. “You can’t see the forest for the trees!” To help you discover our forest, Ken Detloff, Assistant Manager of Grounds Services, will lead you on a walking tour of campus and will point out many different specimens.

Queer communities have always had an impact on culture and history even in eras when living in the open wasn't an option. "Queerying" is Rev. Chelsey Hillyer affectionate name for this combination of critical engagement with the world and creative reimagining that has lead to social change. In times that call for creative responses to oppression, violence, and hatred, she challenges us to examine how we can participate in bringing about the good.
