Tuition and Fees Update

Dear Parents,

Each year about this time we make decisions regarding the next academic year’s budget and comprehensive fee
policy. As you might imagine, over the past few years such decisions have become increasingly important and
difficult. Our key goal in this budgeting process continues to be striking the right balance between the educational
experience that students receive and our costs. It is my goal to work toward limiting increases over the next few
years so that they are at or below the rate of inflation.

In February, the Illinois Wesleyan Board of Trustees approved a comprehensive fee increase of 3.55 percent for the
2013-14 academic year for tuition, room, board and fees. While not as low as we would like, the tuition increase
percentage is our lowest in the past five years and also nearly a full point lower than the national average for private
colleges over that same period. I hope this information demonstrates our commitment to doing all that we can to
ease the financial burden on parents and students. A summary of next year’s costs can be found here.

While cost is one component of value, the quality of the education that students receive is even more important. That
combination of cost and quality is the formula by which Kiplinger’s Personal Finance ranks the best values in private
higher education. I am proud to say that Illinois Wesleyan has been among the nation’s top schools in the Kiplinger’s
rankings in each of the last five years. You may also be interested to know that 30 percent of the cost of an Illinois
Wesleyan education comes from sources other than tuition. Among those revenue sources are contributions by our
alumni and friends and scholarly grants made to our faculty by private foundations and government agencies. The
loyalty of our supporters and the work of our faculty are both good indicators of the quality that we provide.
