Dentistry

Dentists diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and other parts of the mouth. They provide care to help maintain oral health, including cleaning, filling cavities, performing extractions, and fitting dental appliances. Dentists also educate patients on proper oral hygiene. Most dentists work in private practices, either solo or in group settings. A significant number are self-employed. Dentists must earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree and obtain a state license. Dental programs typically take 4 years to complete.
