BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Illinois Wesleyan University has launched the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the University’s history. The Capital Campaign seeks to raise $200 million to expand opportunities for students, strengthen academic excellence, and invest in continued evolution of the private liberal arts experience for a changing world.
This campaign builds on significant momentum across Illinois Wesleyan. Following its recent 175th anniversary, the University is approaching the highest level of enrollment in a decade, and has raised $35 million in fundraising, including a record $3.6 million during All In for Wesleyan, both during the 2025-26 academic year. Illinois Wesleyan has also received national recognition from the U.S. News & World Report, TIME, and The Princeton Review for its academic quality, exceptional student outcomes, and undergraduate experience.
"The Capital Campaign will allow us to build on the progress and investments already underway across the University, with a focus on areas that define the Illinois Wesleyan experience," said IWU President Sheahon Zenger. "That $200 million goal is ambitious, but we fully believe it's within our reach. Illinois Wesleyan has a longstanding tradition of philanthropy, and alumni who want future generations to have the experiences and opportunities they did."

Campaign priorities include accelerating student success, experiential learning and entrepreneurship, cultivating faculty and academic excellence, and enhancing the classroom and campus community.
A centerpiece of that continued evolution is Illinois Wesleyan’s growing network of five Centers for Opportunity and Exploration designed to prepare students for the future workforce. This network began taking shape last academic year with the opening of the Center for Humanities, followed by the opening of the Fisher Quantum Center in May, and, most recently, the opening of the Petrick Idea Center and Talluto Center for Applied Entrepreneurship. The Center for Civil Discourse and Inquiry is currently being developed.
Together, the Centers are expanding opportunities for students across disciplines, strengthening faculty innovation, and connecting the enduring strengths of a liberal arts education with innovation, experiential learning, and preparation for an increasingly dynamic workforce.
“There has never been a better time to be on this campus for both faculty and students,” said Jesse Meyer, Vice President of Advancement. “Illinois Wesleyan is building on the foundation that has been built over the past 175 years that will shape students for their future after they graduate. This campaign gives our community the opportunity to invest in that future.”
Campaign investments will be used to further develop and support the five Centers of Opportunity and Exploration, provide scholarship support, provide students with hands-on internship experiences and research opportunities, and support endowed faculty chairs and professorships. Additional funding will also be used to make investments in campus infrastructure and learning environments, including classroom technology and other learning resources, classroom renovations, residence halls and the athletic center.
The campaign was announced during the President’s Celebration Banquet and Campaign Premiere event, which was held on the evening of Friday, October 2, at the Memorial Center. The event brought together members of the Illinois Wesleyan community to celebrate the University’s history and look toward its future.
The Capital Campaign is being led by Illinois Wesleyan alumni and trustees, Kimberly Sterling ‘92 and Jack Dickens '86, who serve as co-chairs of the steering committee.
The vision for this campaign was drawn from inspiration from the opening line of Alma Wesleyana, “From hearts aflame our love we pledge to thee.” The campaign symbol of the torch and flame incorporates the letters “IWU” and represents a connection between generations of Illinois Wesleyan Titans.
“It represents a love for Illinois Wesleyan carried across generations: legacy, knowledge, possibility, generosity, connection and momentum,” Dickens said. “We know many of you feel the same way that we do about this university. You remember what it was like the first time you stepped onto this campus and found your home at Illinois Wesleyan. The people and experiences that shaped us are why, as alumni, we believe in giving back.”
“‘Honor the Past. Shape the Future’ is not just a campaign tagline, it’s our promise to every student who will walk this campus tomorrow. It is a promise that the same transformative spirit that shaped our lives will be waiting to shape theirs – stronger, bolder and more vibrant than ever,” said President Zenger.
The campaign represents the next chapter in Illinois Wesleyan’s continued evolution, building on 175 years of excellence and expanding access and opportunity for students while advancing academic excellence, experiential learning, and evolving the liberal arts education experience to better prepare students for life after graduation.
