Illinois Wesleyan University welcomes the local community to witness the next generation of musical talent at the School of Music’s annual Jazz Festival on March 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and March 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall.
The festival brings together middle school and high school ensembles for a day of performances, professional feedback and collaboration. Participants will perform for judges, clinicians and their peers, receiving guidance and insights that can help shape their musical growth and inspire them to continue pursuing jazz.
IWU Director of Jazz Reginald Lewis says the event is especially meaningful because it highlights the next generation of jazz musicians.
“The community gets to see what talent is surrounding them,” Lewis said. “We get to witness the future of jazz here. Students perform, receive feedback that can change the trajectory of their lives in music, and they leave inspired and eager to do more.”
The festival also emphasizes the role of the jazz program within IWU and the broader Bloomington-Normal community. Live performances and educational opportunities bring the creativity and culture of jazz music to audiences who may not regularly experience it through live performances.
“A strong jazz program,” Lewis said, “creates opportunities for collaboration between university musicians, local performers and area schools while helping keep the tradition of jazz alive.”
“For young musicians, experiences like the festival are especially valuable because jazz is often learned through live performance and collaboration. Playing in an ensemble teaches listening skills, improvisation, teamwork and confidence on stage while giving students the chance to learn from experienced mentors,” Lewis said.
Ultimately, the festival aims to build a community around music while encouraging the next generation of artists.
