BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University students will face off in the first-ever “Great IWU Bake Off” this week.

The competition is part of Carolyn Nadeau’s “Food, Culture and Society” class, which is a new offering this year. Nadeau is the Chair of the World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department and the Byron S. Tucci Professor of Spanish.

The bake-off will mark the conclusion of a unit focused on celebratory foods. Students formed groups of four on Monday and spent time designing their creations and recipes. They will begin baking on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the Petrick Idea Center food laboratory.

The event will culminate with decorating at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, followed by tasting and judging at approximately 10:45 a.m. Student creations will be judged by Carmen Lozar, School of Art & Design Director; Cam McGown, who works for the physical plant and is a cake lover; and Hans Fritzen, the baker for Coffee Hound in Bloomington.
