BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Bloomington Mayor Dan Brady issued a proclamation on Monday declaring
the University's founding date of Sept. 23 as Illinois Wesleyan University Day.
On this day 175 years ago, the 30 founders of the university created and signed a
declaration of intent to establish IWU. Prior to the Kinder Brothers Distinguished Business Speaker Series event, Brady announced the proclamation and presented a framed copy to President Sheahon
Zenger.
The declaration is as follows:
WHEREAS, Illinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, celebrates its 175th anniversary
in 2025, marking nearly two centuries of unwavering dedication to the pursuit of academic
excellence and the advancement of the liberal arts and sciences; and
WHEREAS, Illinois Wesleyan University has served as a vital educational, cultural, and economic
cornerstone of the City of Bloomington, shaping generations of scholars through a
rigorous, student-centered curriculum and a steadfast commitment to civic engagement;
and
WHEREAS, Illinois Wesleyan University has welcomed a diverse student body from across Illinois,
the United States, and the world, building a vibrant, inclusive, and intellectually
rich campus community that reflects the values of both the institution and our city;
and
WHEREAS, Illinois Wesleyan University is becoming the nation’s leader in entrepreneurial
liberal arts education, building on its rich traditions while pioneering innovative
programs that prepare students to join the workforce in a rapidly changing world;
and
WHEREAS, the University’s alumni — known as Titans — have made substantial contributions
to society across a wide array of fields, embodying the University's mission to foster
creativity, critical thinking, effective communication, strength of character and
a spirit of inquiry; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bloomington recognizes and celebrates Illinois Wesleyan University’s
long-standing role in enhancing the quality of life for its residents through cultural
programs, educational outreach, public service, and mutually beneficial partnerships;
and
WHEREAS, in celebration of its 175th anniversary, Illinois Wesleyan University continues
to inspire excellence, foster innovation, and shape the future of higher education
in our city and beyond;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Dan Brady do hereby proclaim Tuesday, September 23, 2025, as Illinois Wesleyan
University Day in the City of Bloomington, Illinois, and urge all citizens to join
in recognizing the remarkable legacy, contributions, and continuing impact of Illinois
Wesleyan University on our community, our state, and our nation.
