Learning Goals for the Major

As one of our majors at Illinois Wesleyan, you will work with faculty who craft their courses to the following learning goals:

1. Students will understand major concepts, subfields, theoretical perspectives (historic and contemporary), and empirical findings in Psychology.

2. Students will understand and be able to apply basic research methods such as research design (including measurement), data analysis, and interpretation, grounded in the existing literature.

3. In evaluating psychological phenomena, research, and practice, students will demonstrate an ability to use critical thinking, creativity, skeptical inquiry, and scientific reasoning, incorporating an appreciation of sociocultural factors, where appropriate.

4. Students will be able to apply psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues, including to solve practical problems and improve quality of life.

5. Students will understand and appreciate values in Psychology, including but not limited to ethical principles and standards in research, application, and academics.

6. Students will exhibit evidence of personal and professional development relevant to the major. This includes effective communication, good judgment, self-regulation and self-direction, as well as  technological and project management skills (individual and collaborative), helpful both during undergraduate and in the workforce.
