Spring Festival: Japanese Language & Gastronomy, Eating Sustainably

Friday March 3rd at 5:30pm

Art Lecture Hall 218 

An opportunity to learn about Japanese language and Gastronomy, and engage in conversation with Henry and Hiroko Brockman. Henry and Hiroko own an organic farm in our area, supporting more sustainable eating, while preserving our natural ecosystems and waterways.

There will be some Japanese inspired dishes!

Meet your French Tutors: Studying Abroad in Nantes and Illinois

Wednesday February 22, 5:00pm at CLA305

Chat with LRC French tutors Lilly Denney and May Hemon about their experiences studying abroad in Nantes and at Illinois Wesleyan. Taste delicious crêpes nantaises and join a fun activity to break clichés and stereotypes.

Lesser Taught Languages: Egyptian Arabic and Poetry

Friday, January 27th at 4:30pm

Language Resource Center, CLA 303

With our presenter Farah Bassyouni we will explore the Arabic Language, specifically Egyptian Arabic. The event will highlight the characteristics of the language, it’s relationship to other languages, and the connection of the language to people’s life. Farah, an award winner of the Academy of American Poets University & College prize will also talk about her trajectory writing poetry in both Arabic and English. The experience will include a traditional tea in Egypt.

Kichwa: Language, Gastronomy & Culture of the Ecuadorian Amazon

Wednesday, November 16th at 4:30pm

Art Lecture Hall 218 

Our presenters Doris Castillo and Giacomo Rubini will give a live presentation from Ecuador. They will immerse us in the Language, Gastronomy and Culture of Kichwa communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Learn about the characteristics of the Kichwa language, its relationship to Quechua, and about the connection of the language to people’s life. Doris will give us a tour to “Maytu” restaurant in Quito, a cultural project to promote appreciation of the gastronomy of Kichwas. The experience will include a traditional Kichwa drink and small bites.

Live Tango Concert – Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Join us for a special evening of Live Tango music with "Bandoneon Orchestra", top musicians from Urbana-Champaign. There will be performances, a lesson, social dance and tastes from Argentina. Learn about the cultural heritage of Tango in the USA and locally, and hear the beauty of Argentine tango music as played on the instrument that creates its signature sound: the bandoneon!

August 19th - 9am to noon

At The Yoga Lab (207 S. Prospect Road, Suite 2 Bloomington, IL) Join us for an experiential workshop about the Neurosequencial Model for Education and core concepts of NME which include: patterns of stress, self-regulation, state dependence, sequence of engagement, and adult self-care and well-being. Knowledge of these can enhance teaching and learning practices to plan, communicate and implement systems of support to meet the variety of needs of individuals to provide a culture of equity and excellence and overall a positive learning culture. Will include a gentle yoga session, açai bowl and coffee, and talk.
