Illinois Wesleyan University is committed to supporting diversity among students, faculty, and staff, both on campus and abroad. As a part of this commitment, the International Office has created this page as a resource for diverse populations who plan to go abroad.

As in the United States, some societies and groups abroad are more open to accepting diversity than others. You may find that a number of factors can influence your experience while abroad, including your nationality; religious, racial or ethnic heritage; gender; sexual orientation or physical abilities. In some cases, these identifiers may be more important than your individual personality to some members of your host culture. This can be difficult to deal with, but you will be better prepared by educating yourself on the host culture, and by thinking through the many scenarios you may encounter.  Doing this before you go abroad will allow you have a less stressful and more rewarding study abroad experience.

The following are links to pages and websites that students and their parents may find useful.  Students who are concerned about issues they may face while abroad should speak to the study abroad adviser.
