English Literature Course Plan (first 3 semesters)

This is an example course plan based on the 2023-2024 University Catalog; your actual schedule may deviate from this example. Your faculty advisor will work with you to select appropriate courses.

As an IWU student, it is your responsibility to track your progress each semester towards completing graduation requirements using the MyIWU degree audit tool.

Fall Semester

Spring Semester

May Term

  • Optional

*One 100-level English course can be taken in lieu of a 200-level literature course (in the literature concentration only), but it is suggested that majors fulfill lower level requirements at the 200 level. Under no circumstances can two 100 level literature courses count towards the major.

**ENGL 280 is best taken in Spring of the first year or Fall of the second year. ENGL 280 and one 200-level literature course are prerequisites for upper-level literature courses.

Study Abroad

For students interested in studying abroad, the recommended semester(s) is fall or spring, second, third, or fourth year.

Additional Information
  • English majors are advised to take Gateway Colloquium in the Fall, as it is a requirement for 200 level courses.
  • Professor Theune is willing ( mtheune@iwu.edu ) willing to sign a waiver form to waive prerequisites for English majors and minors who wish to enroll in English 280: Understanding Literature. This policy also holds for other 200-level literature courses that have Gateway as a prerequisite.
  • Students planning to double major in English Literature and Secondary Education should also follow the English Literature/Secondary Education Course Plan.
