  • Notify your professor (in advance if possible) of your absence due to illness  Click for an example email.
  • Please note:  Arnold Health Services does not typically provide notes for absences due to illness.
  • Contact Arnold Health Services (AHS) at 309-556-3107 if you need an appointment. To mitigate illness on IWU campus, AHS does not take walk-ins.  If you are experiencing COVID symptoms (congestion, running nose, cough, headache, fever) you may be asked to take an at-home COVID test. AHS does not have at-home COVID tests available. If the test is positive, please let AHS know via the online student portal or phone.

Due to high demand, please understand you may not be able to get a same-day appointment at Arnold Health Services.  If you need to be seen same day, consider contacting Carle Convenient Care at 309-862-5700 located at 1437 E College.  Remember to bring your insurance card, as your health insurance provider will be billed.

5 Day Isolation Period

  • Please isolate yourself from others for 5 days. We recognize that you will need to use community restrooms and get food to-go from the dining hall.  Please always wear a high quality mask when outside your room (available at Arnold Health Services, lower Magill).
  • If you test positive for COVID 19 and:
    • are experiencing symptoms:  Day 1 of isolation is the first full day after the day your symptoms started.
    • are not symptomatic: Day 1 of isolation is the day you tested positive for COVID-19.
  • You may return to class after 5 days if you have been fever free for 24 hours (any temperature 100 F or greater is considered a fever).  You must wear a high quality mask until day 10.

Campus Living during Isolation Period

  • You are not required to leave campus for isolation, if your roommate agrees to allow you to isolate in your room.
  • If you are unable to stay in your room, please make plans to go home for the remainder of your isolation period or contact the Dean of Students office at 309-556-3111 to explore limited on-campus options.  We are reserving a few on-campus spaces for international and out-of-state students.

Attending Classes during Isolation Period

  • You may not attend class during your 5-day isolation period. However, you may attend classes online if that option is available.
  • Please work with your professors, as it is your responsibility to let them know you will be out of class for that 5-day period.

COVID-19 Best Practices

  • Continue monitoring your symptoms. If you are experiencing emergency warning signs (trouble breathing), seek emergency medical care immediately.
  • Wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds multiple times per day, especially before and after meals.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid sharing personal items such as cups, eating utensils, and towels.

Symptoms Arnold Health Services is seeing in many students: Nasal congestion or runny nose, cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue, body or muscle aches, sinus pressure

Suggestions to helpmanage these symptoms: Adequate rest, hydration with extra liquids, hot tea with honey, throat lozenges, salt water gargles, Tylenol or Ibuprofen per label directions,  over-the-counter nasal sprays to decrease inflammation per label directions

Causes of these symptoms are often viral, so antibiotic therapy is not indicated.  Viruses can last 7-10 days.

Serious symptoms of colds or flu in adults and when to seek medical attention: Prolonger fever above 101.0 with fatigue and body aches, symptoms that last longer than 5 days, prolonged sore throat, trouble breathing/shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, fainting or feeling like you are going to faint, confusion or  disorientation, severe or persistent vomiting, severe sinus pain in your face or forehead, swollen gland in the neck or jaw

To help prevent spreading:  Wash hands and wash common surfaces such as counters, tables, desks, and door handles with anti-bacterial disinfectants, cover your cough.

We hope that the above interventions will lessen your symptoms.  If your symptoms persist without improvement, contact us at Arnold Student Health Center 309-556-3107 for a phone consult or an appointment.  We wish you a speedy recovery.

Please visit CDC's website for more info: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/symptoms/coldflu.htm

Is my SORE THROAT strep?

Arnold Student Health does test and occasionally finds students positive with strep throat.  Below is a discussion to educate you about strep throat.

  • Strep throat is a bacterial infection.
Strep throat is an infection in the throat and tonsils caused by bacteria – group A Streptococcus.  However, you could have a sore throat that is caused by a virus.

  • How is Strep infection spread?
By Respiratory Droplets:  The majority of the time is it spread by  breathing droplets in, touching item that has droplet on it and then proceed to touch mouth, nose, or eye, using personal item that is contaminated such as fork, spook, glass , or kissing infected person.

  • What are the symptoms?
These could include:  a sore throat, fever, red and swollen tonsils, white patches or pus on the tonsils, tiny red spots on roof of mouth, enlarged lymph nodes, stomach pain, nausea, headache, and rash.

  • How is strep tested?
Either by a rapid strep test (which we can complete at Arnold Student Health Center) or by a throat culture.

  • How is strep treated?
Strep throat is treated with antibiotics prescribed by a medical provider.  Be sure to complete the entire course of the prescribed antibiotic.

  • What other interventions can I do to feel better?
Stay well hydrated, eat soft food, try throat lozenges, gargle with salt water, set up a humidifier, use over the counter pain relievers, and obtain plenty of rest.

Usually, strep does not include a cough, runny nose, hoarseness or conjunctivitis (pink eye).

Online Student Portal

Arnold Health Services (AHS) has transitioned to an online student portal to check in for appointments, upload documents, complete forms, and securely communicate with Health Services staff. All students need to create a user profile with their IWU student number and IWU email.

If you are an enrolled IWU student, AHS prefers to communicate with you by telephone or secure messages through your student portal for your privacy.  Email is not advised for current students--please use the portal.
