IWU Titan Makers

Nine IWU students look to the camera, smiling, and holding a MakerGirl sign at the first workshop for girls in the community in 2022.

Titan Makers is a student-led initiative of Illinois Wesleyan University that brings hands-on 3D printing and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) workshops to youth across the Bloomington-Normal community. The program empowers both participants and IWU student leaders through experiences designed to educate, inspire, and mentor the next generation of makers.

Workshops generally take place on campus in IWU makerspaces, including the IDEA Center and in future The Petrick Idea Center, and are open to students from under-resourced communities, public and private schools, and any youth curious about the world of STEAM. When transportation to campus is a challenge, Titan Makers may also bring workshops directly into the community through outreach partnerships with local organizations.

Illinois Wesleyan students serve as mentors and role models, helping participants gain confidence, unlock creativity, and envision themselves as future Titans. In the process, our students grow in leadership, collaboration, and purpose—using their skills to do well and do good.

Titan Makers is guided by the four pillars of The Petrick Idea Center:

  • Creativity – Participants explore bold, original ideas through hands-on projects.
  • Collaboration – IWU students and youth work together in a fun, supportive environment.
  • Cross-Discipline – Workshops blend science, technology, art, design, math, education, and more.
  • Conscience – Every experience is designed with purpose, impact, and inclusion in mind.

Through this program, students from the School of Educational Studies and across campus help create transformational experiences—sparking curiosity, building skills, and cultivating future Titans.
