Study Abroad

A minimum of one semester of study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country is required for the major and highly recommended for the minor. See all major/minor requirements here.

 

Study abroad for the Hispanic Studies major

In consultation with your academic advisor and the Director of the International Office, there are numerous programs to choose from including: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Spain.

 

Study abroad for the Hispanic Studies minor

Although studying abroad is not a requirement for the minor, we highly recommend the programs above as well as the IWU Spain Program. Besides consulting with your academic advisor and the Director of the International Office when choosing a program, also consult with the Chair of Hispanic Studies to determine which courses abroad will fulfill the courses for the Hispanic Studies minor.

 

Study abroad for the Secondary Education Spanish Teacher Licensure

Study abroad in a country where Spanish is spoken (one semester prior to spring of the junior year or enrollment in Educ 360). Hispanic Studies majors should strive to enroll only in courses taught in Spanish in one of the IWU-affiliated, semester-programs listed below (other programs can also be considered in consultation with the Chair of Hispanic Studies since new programs are created yearly):

 

  • Chile
    • Santiago (SIT): Comparative Education and Social Change
    • Santiago (IES): Teaching internship, education coursework at Universidad la Católica

 

  • Costa Rica

    • Heredia (IFSA Butler): Teacher Education concentration at Universidad Nacional

 

  • Nicaragua and Cuba
    • Managua (SIT): Youth Culture, Literacy and Media (with comparative study in Cuba)

 

  • Spain

    • Salamanca (IES): Education seminar, Education internship, foreign language teaching methodology course

    • Granada (IES): Internship teaching, Education courses at Universidad de Granada
