Job Details:

Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for Founding Director of our School of Business and Economics. This position will begin June 1, 2023. Salary is competitive and provides excellent benefits.

Institutional Information:

Founded in 1850, Illinois Wesleyan University is a nationally ranked, small, private, undergraduate liberal arts university with selective admission criteria and a tradition of teaching excellence.  Wesleyan is an undergraduate-only learning environment that provides extensive personal attention, with all courses taught by professors and an average class size of 16 students. Experiential learning is a hallmark of Illinois Wesleyan, with two-thirds of our students conducting research and 71 percent completing at least one internship. IWU is located midway between Chicago, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri in the Bloomington-Normal MSA which is approximately 192,000.

The departments of Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, and Economics are currently in the process of joining into a single entity which will become the School of Business and Economics. Consistent with the University's mission that emphasizes integration of the liberal arts and professional education, the School produces socially responsible graduates who are prepared to contribute to and have an impact in the global economy. We accomplish this through an experiential, innovative, and flexible curriculum that is guided and implemented by a professionally and academically engaged faculty. These faculty work closely with students providing them the analytical and technical knowledge necessary to succeed in their careers. Coupled with an emphasis on communication and critical thinking skills, this enables them to become strong ethical leaders and excel in a diverse, ever-changing world and business climate. 

The School serves approximately 350 students through six majors: Accounting, Business, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, and Marketing.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should hold a doctorate or terminal degree in a related academic area, current rank at associate or full professor in an academic discipline represented by the School, and two or more years of experience in a leadership position within an academic department or school. Preferred qualifications include experience working with ACBSP and/or AACSB accreditation, and academic assessment. The successful candidate should present a record of achievement in teaching, intellectual contributions, and service to support appointment to a tenured faculty position at Illinois Wesleyan.

Exceptional candidates from outside academia may be considered based on their academic credentials, business or professional experience, and executive/leadership credentials.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Provost, The Director of the School of Business and Economics provides leadership and direction for all aspects of the School’s academic programs, financial affairs, and human resources through administration and external outreach with additional responsibilities focused on teaching and scholarship. The Director leads the faculty and staff in a participatory governance environment in accordance with the mission of IWU. The Director serves as the chief academic officer of the School and is responsible for both its long-term strategic goals and all day-to-day activities. The Director works collaboratively with the administration and faculty to further the mission of the School and the University.
