Unlicensed Syncopation and Jazz Ensemble to Host Joint Concert

Feb. 23, 2018

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Illinois Wesleyan University’s Unlicensed Syncopation and Jazz Ensemble will present a joint concert on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Westbrook Auditorium in Presser Hall (1210 N. Park St., Bloomington). The event is free and open to the public.

Unlicensed Syncopation is IWU’s vocal jazz ensemble led by visiting instructor of music education Andrew Dahan. The group’s setlist will include pieces such as: “Watch Me Walk Away” by Alyssa Allgood and Hank Mobley, arranged by Andrew Dahan; “Dobbin’s Flowery Vale,” a traditional Irish air and reel song, arranged by Matti Kallio; and “Sing a Song of Song” by Kenny Garrett, arranged by Kerry Marsh.

The IWU Jazz Ensemble, conducted by professor Glenn Wilson, will play music by Billy Strayhorn, George Gershwin, Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal and many more well-known jazz composers. The two groups will then round out the night together with a performance of “Harold’s House of Jazz” by Richie Cole, David Lahm, Kelly Kunz and Amanda Taylor.

Both premier jazz groups, comprised of elite music students under rigorous instruction, are key components of the IWU music program. Collectively, they have been invited to perform at various music events in the surrounding area, have played alongside distinguished guest artists and have toured internationally.
