BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Illinois Wesleyan University will celebrate Homecoming Sept. 30-Oct. 2 with the theme Homecoming of Heroes.
Special activities tied to the theme include a Friday afternoon panel of alumni who were student activists in the 1960s and 1970s. At 2 p.m. four alumni will discuss Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his 1966 visit to campus, and how this period in IWU history shaped their own social consciences and their lives. Another panel of alumni who have served in the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps and Teach for America will discuss their experiences Friday at 4 p.m.
A new event on Friday evening, the Alumni Awards Reception, will honor Alumni Award winners Denny Matthews ’66, Diana Hammer Tscheschlok ’01 and Bob Lewis ’56. Illinois Wesleyan Distinguished Alumna Award for Excellence in Nursing recipient Nancy (Jenkins) Johnson ’78, the undefeated football team of 1965 and the Class of 1966 will also be recognized at the event.
Saturday events include the Captain Ryan A. Beaupre ’95 Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/2 Mile Walk, the annual pancake and sausage breakfast and family fun activities on the Eckley Quadrangle, a guided tour of the more than 1,200 trees gracing the grounds of Illinois Wesleyan, tailgating in the Shirk Center parking lot, and football, men’s and women’s soccer games. Receptions for alumni of residence halls, academic programs and majors, affinity and other groups are also planned for the weekend.
On Sunday the Pride Alumni Community’s annual brunch features the Rev. Chelsey Hillyer ’05 as the speaker, the Collegiate Choir current and alumni members will sing during an All-Campus Service at Evelyn Chapel, and the School of Music will present a piano concert at 1 p.m.
