May 3, 2016

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Two theatre camps for children and youth will be offered this summer on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. Contact Summer on Stage Artistic Director Cristen Monson at or visit for more information.

Spotlight Camp, students ages 12-18, July 18-Aug. 5

Summer on Stage has teamed up with Prairie Fire Theatre’s production of Oklahoma! to offer a performance opportunity for youth. Students ages 12-18 will perform a 60-minute version of Oklahoma! incorporating the set, props and pieces of costumes used in the professional production mounted by Prairie Fire that same week. The Spotlight Camp will run weekday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. from July 18-Aug. 5 on the Illinois Wesleyan campus. Cost is $275 per participant.

Students will receive acting, dance and voice instruction and rehearse for three weeks before presenting a performance for family and friends on Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. in Presser Hall’s Westbrook Auditorium. Students must audition for participation in the camp. Auditions are scheduled for Sunday, May 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Westbrook Auditorium. Visit the website for audition music and scenes for reading or to register for the audition.

Footlight Camp, grades 1-5, Aug. 1-5

A camp for younger performers focuses on musical theatre and movement. In addition to acting games and creative exploration, students will learn songs and dance numbers from the score of Oklahoma Jr. and present a special pre-show performance for family and friends on Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. in Westbrook Auditorium. Students must attend all five days of the camp (9 a.m. to noon each day) and be available to perform on Aug. 6. The fee is $150 per student. Because of the popularity of this camp, early registration is encouraged by visiting the website.
