BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Illinois Wesleyan University will celebrate Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Monkey Feb. 14 with live entertainment and samplings of Pan-Asian cuisine.
The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hansen Student Center, and is open to the public. Admission is free, although donations will be accepted for relief efforts for the recent earthquake in Taiwan.
The featured act at the IWU Lunar New Year celebration will be the professional Japanese drum ensemble Tsukasa Taiko Legacy. Illinois Wesleyan and Heartland Community College students will present Mongolian songs, fan dance, tai chi and performances on the Chinese instruments guzheng and pipa. A lion dance and tables with hands-on activities representing culture from China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam round out the event.
The event is sponsored by the Asian Studies program and the registered student organizations of Chinese Culture & Communication Club, Korean Culture Club, Cross-Cultural Connections and the Asian Pacific Student Association.
