Jazz Festival to Feature Vocalist, Trumpeter

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Illinois Wesleyan University’s annual Jazz Festival Jan. 22-23 will feature vocalist Kate Reid and scream trumpet virtuoso Steve Reid.

The Reids will perform with Illinois Wesleyan’s instrumental Jazz Ensemble and vocal jazz group Unlicensed Syncopation at a concert Jan. 23 at 12:45 p.m. in Westbrook Auditorium. The Reids will also perform and discuss their careers in music and education from 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 22 in Presser Hall.

The festival invites middle and high school vocal and instrumental jazz students for performances, coaching sessions, and master classes taught by Kate Reid and Steve Reid. Students also participate in open rehearsals with guest artists from throughout the Midwest and the IWU Jazz Ensemble and Unlicensed Syncopation.

Kate Reid is the director of the Jazz Vocal Performance program at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. She has served as guest artist, clinician and adjudicator at jazz and choral festivals throughout the United States and Canada. She has sung and appeared with such notables as Jon Hendricks, Mark Murphy, Paul Anka, Liza Minnelli and Tito Puente. She also works regularly as a studio and session singer. Recent film credits include Star Trek Into Darkness; Oz, The Great and Powerful; Epic and Men in Black III.

Steve Reid has recorded and performed with the Brian Setzer Orchestra; KC and the Sunshine Band; Mercer Ellington; Prince; Earth, Wind and Fire; Kirk Franklin, and many other artists.
