Symphonic Winds, Jazz Lab Concert

BLOOMINGTON. Ill—Illinois Wesleyan University’s Symphonic Winds and Jazz Lab will
present a concert Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Westbrook Auditorium. The concert
is free and open to the public.
The Symphonic Winds ensemble consists of approximately 25 Illinois Wesleyan students
that perform challenging pieces from the best literature available for band. The Nov.
12 concert will include Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue in G Minor,” Philip Sparke’s “Flying
the Breeze,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Flourish for Wind Band” and Frank Erickson’s
“Tamerlane” along with other works. The ensemble is directed by Assistant Professor
of Music Roger Garrett.
The Jazz Lab is a student-formed jazz group consisting of music and non-music majors.
The group performs both contemporary and classic jazz pieces. Their performance on
Nov. 12 will include works from Stevie Wonder (“You Are the Sunshine of My Life”),
Duke Ellington (“Mood Indigo”), Sade (“Smooth Operator”) and other composers. This
semester’s Jazz Lab features a unique five-trombone section paired with a rhythm section.
Assistant Professor of Music Timothy Pitchford directs the ensemble.
