Civic Orchestra to Perform “Pops” Concert

Nov. 4, 2015

BLOOMINGTON, Ill—The Illinois Wesleyan Civic Orchestra (IWCO) will host a concert called “Kaleidoscope” on Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The orchestra will be held at the Bloomington Center for Performing Arts, located at 600 N East St, Bloomington, IL. The concert is free and open to the public.

Instead of traditional orchestral pieces, the IWCO will perform well-known pieces of mainstream music, as well as lighter-fare classical works including selections from the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and a collection of Latin American pieces (Márquez’s Danzón No.2, Piazzolla’s Oblivion, and Milhaud’s French The Ox on the Roof). In addition, two student groups will showcase their own self-composed and arranged works, performed both by the main orchestra as well as a student-led rock band.

The IWCO is an all-student orchestral group composed of students from a variety of disciplines. The ensemble is in its 31st season and specializes in large-format orchestral pieces. Several esteemed guests have performed with the IWCO, including the former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Armando Ghitalla, Chicago Lyric Opera baritone Roger Roloff, and Grammy Award-winning soprano and Illinois Wesleyan alum Dawn Upshaw.

Visiting Professor of Music Lev Ivanov conducts the orchestra. Ivanov is an accomplished conductor who has been a part of the Arizona State University Lyric Opera Theater, the Brigham Young Philharmonic and Chamber orchestras, and the Bulgarian State Opera Ruse Symphony Orchestra, among other prestigious orchestras around the world.
