Summer Theatre Camps

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— “Summer on Stage,” theatre camps for youth, will take place in the E. Melba Kirkpatrick Lab Theatre at Illinois Wesleyan.

According to Cristen Monson, recruitment coordinator for the School of Theatre Arts, Summer on Stage’s mission is to provide a safe, nurturing and professional environment in which students can explore the dramatic arts.

Footlight Camp (students ages 7-11, or entering grades 1-6)

Two sessions: June 2* – June 13

Session 1: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. -12 noon.

Session 2: Monday-Friday, 1-4 p.m.

*Because of the extended school year, there will be a group class Monday and Tuesday from 5-6:30 p.m. for both sessions (no daytime sessions on the first Monday and Tuesday).

Cost is $200. IWU employees and alumni will receive a 10 percent discount.

Attendees will learn acting, improvisation, dance, voice, movement and team and confidence building skills. There will be a public performance June 13 at 4 p.m.

Spotlight Camp (students ages 12-16, or entering grades 6-12)

One three-week session July 7-25, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Cost is $270 (includes camp t-shirt and snack each afternoon). IWU employeesand alumni will receive a 10 percent discount.

Students will take acting, dancing, singing and technical theatre classes in the mornings, and will rehearse for a final showcase, scheduled for the last day of camp at 3 p.m., in the afternoons. Participants will improve their skills in choreography, blocking and character development, and learn about the wide variety of work that is put into creating a show.
