BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Five student soloists will be featured artists at Illinois Wesleyan’s Civic Orchestra concert, titled “The Annual Henry Charles Memorial Concerto-Aria Concert.” Maya Abboud ’16, Rebecca Buechel ’15, Elena Denny ’16, Matthew Mason ‘16 and Emily Stich ’15, who were selected as winners of the School of Music’s Concerto-Aria Competition, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA), (600 N. East St.).
The concert commemorates the late Henry Charles, an Illinois Wesleyan professor of voice for 42 years and a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national music fraternity. Following the concert, Alpha Lambda Delta will host a free reception in Charles’ honor.
The Civic Orchestra, under the direction of Professor of Music and founder Steven Eggleston, is comprised of students from all disciplines.
The program will include: Johannes Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, William Walton’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, featuring Abboud on viola, Gaetano Donizetti’s O Mio Fernando, showcasing mezzo-soprano Buechel, Camille Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, with Denny on cello, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, presenting Mason on piano, Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Concerto for Bassoon in F, featuring Stich on bassoon, and Capriccio Espagnol by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors and IWU alumni and $2 for high school students with an ID. There will be free admission for Illinois Wesleyan students with an ID and children under eighth grade.
