Stevens Places Second in Brass Competition
June 10, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Samantha Stevens ’16 (Des Plaines, Ill.) placed second in a recent
tenor trombone soloist competition at the International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC)
at Northern Kentucky University.
The Susan Slaughter Solo Brass Competition is open to any gender and all ages. Soloists
are divided into three age categories and perform one lyrical and one technical solo
from a required repertoire list for the judges.
“It was my first time taking part in a solo competition, so it was a little nerve-wracking,”
said Stevens, an orchestral instruments major. “Placing in the competition was a nice
surprise and definitely was a bit of a confidence booster.”
Founded by Susan Slaughter in 1991, IWBC has hosted numerous competitions and conferences,
and continues to develop and support women brass musicians around the world.
