Modern Family Weekend
Sept. 10, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Students and their families are invited to join Illinois Wesleyan
University for a fun-filled “Modern Family”-themed weekend on Friday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 29. The weekend is an opportunity
families to familiarize themselves with the social and academic life at IWU.
Tickets for Family Weekend cost $20 per person and include breakfast and a picnic on the Eckley Quadrangle at lunchtime on Saturday as well as entry to athletic events and evening performances. Families can register online at www.iwu.edu/student-activities/FamilyWeekend.html
Along with exploring IWU, family members will also have an opportunity to explore Bloomington, with guided tours of historic Downtown Bloomington and vans facilitating visits to the Bloomington Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning.
On-campus events will include the International Clue Night organized by students of Kemp Hall International House, as well as “Information about the IWU Jazz Ensemble,” “Experience the Possibilities: Internship at Illinois Wesleyan” and “For First-Year Parents.”
On Friday evening at 8 p.m. in the Hansen Student Center (300 Beecher St., Bloomington), IWU students are encouraged to bring their families to see Campus Activities Magazine’s Best Male Performer of 2013, Mat Franco who will perform his act as a magician, a comedian and a mind reader.
Since the age of four, Franco has been fascinated with magic. At six, he began to teach himself tricks of the trade by utilizing the slow-motion feature on his VCR while watching magic tapes. Today, he considers his act something that is much more than tricking his audiences; rather, he hopes to use his talents to provoke ideas with relatable humor.
On Saturday evening at 9 p.m., students and families are invited to the Hansen Student Center for a performance by the Hip-Hop and R&B family quartet Kazual.
Kazual, a group that describes their style of music as “DooWopHipHop,” has opened for artists like Destiny’s Child and Nelly. Their blend of harmonies can be heard in the song “Tellin Me No” by GUY.
