May Term Art Exhibits

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Illinois Wesleyan University’s Merwin and Wakeley Galleries, located in the Joyce G. Eichhorn Ames School of Art building (6 Ames Plaza, Bloomington), will feature the artwork of Brent Cole and Dane Sorenson from Thursday, May 9 to Thursday, May 30. 

The opening reception for both galleries will be on Thursday, May 9 from 4 to 6 p.m., with a lecture by both artists at 4:15 p.m.   

Regular hours for the Merwin and Wakeley Galleries are Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Cole’s exhibit Red Right Returning will be featured in the Merwin Gallery. Currently an associate professor of glass at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., Cole earned a bachelor of fine arts in glass from The Cleveland Institute of Art and a master of fine arts in sculpture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Cole has been a teaching assistant for various artists at the Pilchuck School in Seattle and the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, N.C. He has also been a resident artist at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Smithville, Tenn. and the Energyxchange in Burnsville, N.C.

Sorenson’s exhibit Waterpotz will be on display in the Wakeley Gallery. Receiving a bachelor of fine arts in studio art from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and a master of fine arts in ceramics from Illinois State University.  Sorenson currently lives and works in Normal where he is an adjunct instructor of art at Heartland Community College.
