School of Music to Present Concerto Aria

Feb. 6, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan Civic Orchestra will present the Henry Charles Memorial Concerto-Aria Concert on Friday Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (600 N. East St., Bloomington).

Tickets for the Concerto-Aria are $10 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens and alumni, $2 for High School students with an ID, and University students and those in eighth grade and under are admitted at no cost.

The concert is named in memory of the late Henry Charles, a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia national music fraternity and a professor of voice at IWU for 42 years. The Alpha Lambda chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, whose IWU chapter was founded in 1924, has been a contributing sponsor of concerto-aria since 1979.

The concert will showcase the four soloists chosen to perform with the Illinois Wesleyan Civic Orchestra. The soloists were chosen through the School of Music’s Concerto-Aria Competition. This year the featured soloists are senior Brad Campbell, alto saxophone, senior Michael Grittani, cello, junior Samuel Sterbenc, euphonium, and senior Rachel Ann West, piano.

Steven W. Eggleston, Professor of Music and Chair of the Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion Department, will direct and conduct the concert.  Featured pieces include Symphony no. 103 by Franz Joesph Haydn, Concerto for Alto Saxaphone by Alexander Glazunov, Concerto in b minor for Violoncello by Antonn, Symphonic Variants by James Curnow and Piano Concerto no. 2 in c minor by Sergei Rachmaninoff.  The concert will conclude with Light Calvary Overture by Franz von Supp.
