World Languages Strategies for Success Workshop

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – On Friday, Feb. 17 Illinois Wesleyan University’s Department of
Hispanic Studies and Pearson Education will host the “World Languages Strategies for
Success Workshop” from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Hansen Student Center (300 Beecher
St., Bloomington). Lunch and door prizes from Pearson Education will be included.
The day’s agenda begins with registration and a continental breakfast from 9:00 –
9:30 a.m. The first presentation, “Assessment and Evaluation: Two Approaches to Improving
Student Learning,” will be led by Judith Liskin-Gasparro, associate professor in the
department of Spanish & Portuguese from the University of Iowa. Liskin-Gasparro will
talk about the complementary approaches of program evaluation and the assessment of
student learning outcomes and will demonstrate how both can contribute to the improvement
of student learning. The presentation will last from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Following Liskin-Gasparro’s presentation, Bob Hemmer, Ph.D., from Pearson Higher
Education, will conduct a lecture titled, “Online Learning…So, How’s that Working
Out?” This presentation will include a discussion on how new technology has changed
the way both instructors and students approach learning a new language. It is scheduled
from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
After a lunch break from 12:30- 1:30, Dale Koike, professor of Spanish and Portuguese
linguistics of the University of Texas at Austin, will lead a third presentation titled,
“L2 Learning through Pragmatics and Sociocultural Awareness.” Koike will focus on
the linguistic area of pragmatics and their relationship to second language learning.
The event will conclude with a raffle from 2:30 - 3:00 p.m.
