posterAlice's Golden Hour and Adaptation at Lab Theatre

May 17, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan School of Theatre Arts (SoTA) will present two May Term performances. The first, Alice's Golden Hour, has been adapted and directed by Megan Lee Francomb, Class of 2012, and is based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Peter Studlo, Class of 2012, will be directing the second show, Adaptation by Elaine May.

The performances will take place on May 18-19 at 8 p.m., with a matinee performance on Sunday, May 20 at 2 p.m. in the E. Melba Johnson Kirkpatrick Laboratory Theatre (304 E. Graham St., Bloomington).

Tickets are currently available for purchase and include admission to both shows. General admission tickets are $3, and $2 with a valid student ID. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on show nights beginning at 7 p.m. Shows will begin with Alice's Golden Hour, followed by Adaptation. There will be a 10- minute intermission between the performances.

Alice's Golden Hour details the journey of a young girl coming to terms with growing up, discovering how to enter the adult world while maintaining her childhood curiosity and imagination. Francomb, the show's director, was especially drawn to this storyline as she faces the post-collegiate world.

"Over the course of my senior year I have watched friends get married, have kids, and get "real" jobs. What saddens me the most is not how we are growing apart, but how some of my friends have lost their sense of adventure," said Francomb. "I want to remain curious throughout my life and Alice reminds me that I don't have to let go of my childhood dreams."

Adaptation also explores the coming-of-age process, following the journey of a man, Phil Benson, as he plays the literal "game of life." The play creates a picture of this contestant from birth until death as he travels through the "seven ages of man," ultimately raising questions as to what defines success, security and happiness.
