BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, as well as the Spanish and Latino Student Association (SALSA), will host a variety of events on Illinois Wesleyan University’s campus.
Hispanic Heritage Month is nationally observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year. The celebrations begin in the middle of the month in honor of the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Initiated by President Lyndon B. Johnson in September of 1968, the event was first named National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, it was extended to a month long celebration.
