Evelyn Chapel Schedule for Fall 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – For the 2011 fall semester, Illinois Wesleyan University will host a series of “First Wednesdays” chapel services, as well as special Sunday worship services, Chaplain Chats and tradition-specific events.

The services, which are open to the public, will be led by the Rev. Elyse Nelson Winger, who joined Illinois Wesleyan as the University Chaplain in August. Over the past several years, she has also worked as an associate pastor for St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomington, and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dearborn, Mich. She served as an intern, later as the interim director of Joint Refugee Ministry, at St. Andrew’s Church in Cairo, Egypt. Nelson Winger received a bachelor of arts degree from Wellesley College and a master of divinity degree from the University of Chicago.

The chapel schedule for the fall semester is as follows:

First Wednesdays are multireligious and non-denominational services led by IWU students, the Evelyn Chapel Gospel Choir and the University Chaplain. The services will take place at 11 a.m. on Sept. 7, Oct. 5 and Nov 2, in Evelyn Chapel (1301 N. Park St., Bloomington).

Oct. 5: The Spirituality of Social Justice

Nov. 2: Faith and the Common Good

Special Sunday worship services will also take place in Evelyn Chapel.

Sept. 11: Service of Remembrance marking the 10th anniversary of 9/11

Sept. 18: 10 a.m., Family Weekend worship in the Christian tradition, “Our Family Tree”

Oct. 23: 10 a.m., Homecoming Weekend worship in the Christian tradition: “Sacred Story, Our Stories,” featuring an IWU Collegiate Choir reunion performance.

Chaplain Chats will begin Sunday, Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. Conducted by University Chaplain Elyse Nelson Winger, these weekly conversations will focus on matters of faith and spirituality. They will take place in dorm living rooms across campus, beginning in Munsell Hall.

Tradition-specific events are co-sponsored by the Office of the University Chaplain. Dates and events are still being determined but will include:

Aug. 31: 5:15 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Eid Celebration in the Davidson Room of the Memorial Center (104 University St., Bloomington), hosted by the Muslim Students’ Association

Nov. 30: time TBA, Celebration of St. Nicholas for the Advent season, Evelyn Chapel

There will also be Alternative Spring Break meetings and Volunteer Services programming, dates and times TBA.
