IWU Students to Host Benefit Concert for Haiti
January 20, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - In response to the recent earthquakes and resulting devastation in Haiti, Illinois Wesleyan student leaders along with
Rebecca Gearhart, chair of the sociology and anthropology departments and associate
professor of anthropology, have joined together to plan a benefit concert featuring
a battle of the bands for Haiti on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Hansen Student
Center (300 Beecher St., Bloomington).
There is a suggested donation of $5 for students and $10 for community members. Attendees
are also encouraged to "tip" the bands they like in the buckets provided. All proceeds
will go to Partners in Health.
The battle of the bands to benefit Haiti will feature a mix of performers consisting
of students, faculty, staff, and community members and will have music ranging from
rock to Irish folk. In addition, speakers from various campus organizations will update
the audience on the situation in Haiti in terms of the environmental impact of the
earthquake and how the money raised from the event will be used.
"You sometimes feel so helpless and disempowered when horrible global atrocities happen.
This is a great way for IWU and the community to stop just reading about it and actually
do something," said Jessica Meyer, a junior international studies major from Chicago,
