BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – On Saturday, Jan. 23, the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra (CUSO) will premiere the latest orchestral work of Illinois Wesleyan alumnus Brian Baxter, Class of 2007. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Illinois (500 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana).
In celebration of their 50th anniversary, the CUSO commissioned four Illinois composers to write short works for each of their 2009-2010 subscription concerts. Baxter, who graduated from IWU with a bachelor of music in composition, was chosen as one of the four composers.
The theme of the concert is Faith, Tragedy & Joy. In addition to Baxter’s latest orchestral effort, Cahokia, the CUSO will perform Mendelssohn’s Overture to the Oratorio, St. Paul, Christopher Rouse’s Flute Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.
