BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University School of Music’s Jazz Lab Ensemble will present a concert on Saturday April 19, at 7:30 p.m. The performance will take place in Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall (1210 Park St., Bloomington) and is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Thomas W. Streeter, professor of music and director of the jazz program at Illinois Wesleyan, the Jazz Ensemble will perform: “Nostalgia In Times Square” (arranged by Sy Johnson), “The Way We Were” (arranged by John Higgins), “Almost Like Being in Love” (arranged by Lennie Niehaus), “Crazy Rhythm” (arranged by Frank Mantooth), “Girl Talk,” “Power Surge,” “Round Midnight,” “Look for the Silver Lining” (arranged by Sammy Nelson), “Georgia On My Mind” (arranged by Dave Barduhn), “Center Line,” “Jelly Roll” (arranged by Sy Johnson), and “Café Rio” (arranged by Mike Tomaro).
The following IWU seniors will be featured throughout the concert: Dan Czachura, on baritone saxophone, Katie Harshbarger, on piano and Nicole Valdez, on alto saxophone. Kristina Dakis, on tenor saxophone, Jamie Burchett, on trombone, Allison Crain on vocal, Dan Morris on trumpet, Kyle Hoffman, on trumpet, Mark Steiner, on alto saxophone and Gary Weisenberger, on trumpet.
The IWU Jazz Lab Band is open to all students of the University by audition. Liberal arts students are encouraged to play side by side with their music major peers.The emphasis of the ensemble is to develop skills that would make a student informed as to jazz directing techniques and the choosing of excellent jazz literature. The literature for the ensemble includes music from all big band styles, with an emphasis on the jazz classics.
