Illinois Wesleyan University Announces Faculty Tenure, Advancement

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.—Four Illinois Wesleyan University faculty members have been awarded tenure and eight have been awarded promotions and rank by the IWU Board of Trustees this week.

Advancement to tenure and promotion to associate professor from assistant professor are Victoria Folse, School of Nursing and Michael Theune, English.  Karen Schmidt, The Ames Library and Susan Swanlund, School of Nursing also received tenure. 

Folse has a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Illinois Wesleyan, a master’s degree from University of Illinois, Chicago and a Ph.D. from St. Louis University.  She joined IWU in 2006 as an assistant professor of Nursing. 

Theune has two bachelor’s of art degrees from Hope College and the University of Oxford.  He received a master’s degree from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Houston.  Theune joined IWU in 2002 as an assistant professor of English.

Schmidt, who joined Illinois Wesleyan in 2007, earned both her bachelor’s degree in anthropology and master’s degree in library science from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.  She obtained her doctorate in library science and information from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Swanlund, a faculty member since 2002, has a bachelor’s degree from Illinois Wesleyan University.  She received a master’s degree from Texas Women’s University and a Ph.D. degree from St. Louis University. 

Six Other Faculty Members Earn Promotions in Rank

Promoted to professor from associate professor are Christopher Callahan, Modern Classical Languages and Literature; Robert Delvin, The Ames Library; Linda French, Physics, Sharie Metcalfe, School of Nursing and William Morris, Philosophy. 

Mia Smith, Physical Education was promoted to associate professor from assistant professor. 

Callahan joined the University in 1989 as an assistant professor of French and Spanish.  He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, a master’s from Middlebury College and a Ph.D. from Indiana University.  Delvin received a bachelor’s degree from Hope College, a master’s from Eastern Michigan University and a master of arts in library science degree from the University of Michigan.  He joined IWU in 1980. 

French received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and master’s degree and Ph.D. from Cornell University.  She joined IWU in 2002 as an associate professor of physics.  Metcalfe joined IWU in 1979.  She received a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University and two master’s degrees as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.  She has also received a Ph.D. Wayne State University.    

Morris received a bachelor’s degree from Rhodes College and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.  He joined IWU in 2000 as an associate professor of philosophy.   Smith joined Illinois Wesleyan in 1998 as an assistant professor of Physical Education.  She has received bachelor’s and master’s from Southern Illinois University.
