Services to Honor NIU Victims

Feb. 18, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A chapel service in solidarity with the Northern Illinois University community will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in Evelyn Chapel, replacing the originally scheduled Founders' Day service.

In addition, a candlelight service at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Evelyn Chapel will honor those affected by the Feb. 14 tragedy at NIU.

These "Services of Remembrance and Light" will provide an opportunity for the Illinois Wesleyan and Bloomington-Normal communities to pray for and support their NIU friends and colleagues.

The candlelight service will include an open forum for anyone to share his or her feelings and experiences related to last week's shooting, to offer words of sympathy and comfort to the NIU community and to support one another through this difficult time.

Northern Illinois University graduate Steven Kazmierczak, 27, opened fire in a classroom on the DeKalb campus last Thursday, fatally shooting five students and then himself.

"Our hopes and prayers are with our friends at NIU at this difficult time," Illinois Wesleyan President Richard F. Wilson said in a letter to the IWU community after the shootings.
