BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University’s Multicultural Student Affairs will host an event to simulate an African-American barber shop at the Multicultural Center (1405 Park St., Bloomington) on September 18 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Students are invited to experience the atmosphere of an African-American barber shop and the lively discussions that take place in these venues.
The simulated barber shop will have an African-American barber to provide a full cut to the first eight students that arrive, and will engage in conversations with all students about topics such as politics, news, relationships, religion, and sports. The barber shop will also have magazines, a television and an x-box 360.
Before arriving at the simulated barber shop, students are encouraged to take the time to view the showcased series of art that will be on display across campus throughout the day. The series, “Follow the Frame,” will transport students into the scene of the barber shop and show more about the cultural aspects of African-American life. After the event, the framed artwork will be displayed in the Multicultural Center for the rest of the year.
