Civic Orchestra to Perform Annual Concerto/Aria Concert

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The winners of Illinois Wesleyan University's annual Henry Charles
Memorial Concerto/Aria Competition will be featured soloists in a concert given by
the Illinois Wesleyan Civic Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16.
The concert, which will take place in the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts
(110 E. Mulberry St., Bloomington), costs $10 for the general public, with discounts
available for senior citizens, students and IWU alumni.
The four competition winners will perform the following pieces: junior Vera Stefanovich
of Winetka, Ill., Tchaikovsky's "Violin Concerto;" senior Luke Gullickson of Cedar
Rapids, Iowa, Listzt's "Piano Concerto No. 1;" junior Michael Lawton of River Forest,
Ill., Debussy's clarinet "Rhapsodie" and senior Amanda Fuerst of Appleton, Wis., Mozart's
The orchestra, under the direction of founder Steven W. Eggleston, professor of music
at IWU, will also perform Verdi's "La Florza del Destino" and Stravinsky's "Firebird."
Now in its 22nd season, the IWU Civic Orchestra is an ensemble comprised of IWU students
and Bloomington-Normal area musicians.
The concert is named in memory of the late Henry Charles, a member of Pi Mu Alpha
Sinfonia national fraternity. The Alpha Lambda chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, whose IWU
chapter was founded in 1924, has been a contributing sponsor of the concerto/aria
concert since 1979.
