IWU Celebrates Homecoming with Activities and Titan Pride

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University will hold its 2007 Homecoming celebration from Friday, Oct. 19 to Sunday, Oct. 21. Events will include a WESN Anniversary Reunion celebrating 35 years of WESN radio, as well as activities for Acacia Social Fraternity’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

WESN’s 35th Anniversary clebration will include a free lecture presented in the “Back to College” program. This 50-minute presentation, titled “35 Years of WESN 88.1 FM: Stories, Pictures and Sounds from the Far Left, ” will provide alumni with a glimpse at the trials and tribulations of being on air from the days of vinyl to the iPod age. It will take place on Friday, at 10 a.m., in the Beckman Auditorium of The Ames Library (1 Ames Plaza, Bloomington).

Other 50-minute presentations in the “Back to College” program include:

• “Walk a Kilometer in my Shoes,” Reenie Bradley, IWU study abroad, 11 a.m., Beckman Auditorium of The Ames Library

• “Do the 60s still matter?” Michael Weis, professor of history, 1 p.m., Instruction Lab of The Ames Library

• “1 EZ Lesson in Design Fundamentals,” Curtis Trout, professor of theatre arts, 1 p.m., Theatre Annex next to the Information Technology House (1311 N. Park St., Bloomington)

• “Travel with IWU Alumni in 2008,” Bob Carpenter of Alumni Holidays International (AHI), 2 p.m., Beckman Auditorium of The Ames Library

• “The Birth of a Star,” Lew Detweiler, Physics Department emeritus faculty, 3 p.m. Beckman Auditorium of The Ames Library

At 11 a.m. on Friday, there will be an Alumni and Friends Golf Outing at Prairie Vista Golf Course (502 Sale Barn Rd., Bloomington).

From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. there will be tailgating at the Shirk Center Parking Lot and at 6:30 p.m. students will participate in the annual Titan Games.  For more student events, visit https://www.iwu.edu/news/2007/hc_Homecoming2007_1007.html

The Ryan A. Beaupre (’95) Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. at the IWU track, located in the 400 block of E. Kelsey St., north of the Shirk Center.

Also on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. is the 8th Annual Classic Car Show on the Eckley Quadrangle, organized by Roger Garrett, a member of the McLean County Antique Automobile Club, and Assistant Professor of Music at IWU. The IWU Titan Band will perform at the event, on the steps of Sheean Library.

The School of Nursing Homecoming Brunch and Social Hour will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday in the commons area of the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (201 E. Beecher St., Bloomington).

The WESN Anniversary Reunion will take place on Saturday as well, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.  There will be a continental breakfast in the Cabana (behind Kemp Hall), as well as tours of the current WESN studio.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Acacia Fraternity will give tours of their chapter house (1307 N. Park St., Bloomington).

A ceremony will be conducted beginning at 10:55 a.m. Saturday at the future site of the Minor Myers jr. Welcome Center, after which building beams will be available for people to sign throughout the weekend.

An Alumni Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Shirk Center’s performance gym, where three alumni awards will be presented, and the IWU football team will play Elmhurst College at 1:30 p.m. at Wilder Field, located behind the Shirk Center. 

Saturday evening there will be several reunion parties and dinners. The 60th, 55th and 45th Reunion Socials and Dinners will take place at the Doubletree Hotel Conference Center (Veterans Parkway at Brickyard Dr., Bloomington) at 6 p.m.

The 35th, 30th and 25th Reunion Socials and Dinners will take place at Biaggi’s Ristorante (1501 Veteran’s Parkway, Bloomington) at 6 p.m.

The 20th Reunion Social and Dinner will be in the Davidson Room, on campus, in the Memorial Center at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, October 21, at 10 a.m. there will be an All-University Homecoming Service at Evelyn Chapel (1301 Park St., Bloomington) followed by the Minority Alumni Network Recognition Ceremony and Service in the chapel. 

Also on Sunday is the Acacia Fraternity Alumni/Active Football Game on the IWU football practice field at 10 a.m., followed by a BBQ at the chapter house at noon.
