IWU Student Lobbies for Nursing

May 5, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan senior Emily Hejmanowski, a nursing major from New Lenox, Ill., spent the spring 2006 semester lobbying in Springfield for nurses' rights.  Interning with Sue Clark, an Illinois Nurses Association lobbyist, Hejmanowski combined her interests in politics and nursing by traveling to the state capital once a week to take part in legislation discussion and talk with politicians about current nursing issues.

On Feb. 23, Hejmanowski, joined by the rest of her IWU senior seminar nursing class, met Senator Bill Brady [R-Bloomington], Representative Dan Brady [R-Bloomington] and other legislators at Illinois Nurses Association Student Lobby Day.

The students learned the basics of lobbying and, along with 1,400 other students from across the state, marched toward the Capitol, lobbying against important issues in the nursing and healthcare industry such as mandatory overtime.

Hejmanowski addressed the students, giving a student's perspective on lobbying.
