IWU Student Lobbies for Nursing
The senior seminar nursing class participated in the Illinois Nurses Association Student
Lobby Day in Springfield.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan senior Emily Hejmanowski, a nursing major from
New Lenox, Ill., spent the spring 2006 semester lobbying in Springfield for nurses'
rights. Interning with Sue Clark, an Illinois Nurses Association lobbyist, Hejmanowski
combined her interests in politics and nursing by traveling to the state capital once
a week to take part in legislation discussion and talk with politicians about current
On Feb. 23, Hejmanowski, joined by the rest of her IWU senior seminar nursing class,
met Senator Bill Brady [R-Bloomington], Representative Dan Brady [R-Bloomington] and
other legislators at Illinois Nurses Association Student Lobby Day.
The students learned the basics of lobbying and, along with 1,400 other students from
across the state, marched toward the Capitol, lobbying against important issues in
the nursing and healthcare industry such as mandatory overtime.
Hejmanowski addressed the students, giving a student's perspective on lobbying.
