IWU Student Honored for Work in Governor's Environmental Corps

August 8, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Matthew Anderson, an IWU senior biology and sociology major from Mt. Prospect, Ill., was honored at a recent luncheon in the executive mansion in Springfield for his work in the Governor's Environmental Corps (GEC).

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) recognized 34 college students working in the GEC program over the summer.  Sponsored by Governor Rod Blagojevich and the IEPA, the students spent their GEC internship helping the IEPA with regulatory and compliance assistance operations in the office, as well as participating in regular field trips and workshops dealing with environmental challenges and solutions.  They were able to help restore wetlands, pick up trash, and tour landfills and treatment plants.  The internship lasted approximately 9 weeks and was designed to promote environmental awareness and provide a better knowledge of issues and careers in the environmental field.
