BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The University's flagship publication, Illinois Wesleyan University Magazine, was awarded the top prize (Gold Medal) for "Best Alumni/Institution Magazine" in this year's CASE District Five awards. IWU Magazine was chosen best in its division of schools with a full-time enrollment between 1,001 and 2,999 students.
CASE (the Council for Advancement and Support of Education) is the professional organization for advancement professionals at all levels who work in alumni relations, communications, and development. CASE's District Five (the Great Lakes District) encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin and includes 400-plus member institutions.
IWU Magazine is produced by the University Communications Office - led by Matt Kurz, vice president for Public Relations - and is distributed quarterly to 23,000 alumni, friends, parents, faculty, students, and staff of the University. Staff involved in the Magazine's daily operation include Tim Obermiller, editor, and Gary Schwartz, graphics designer. University photographer Marc Featherly also regularly contributes photos to the Magazine.
Over the years, many Illinois Wesleyan students have served as editorial assistants for IWU Magazine; most recently, senior Sarah Zeller and junior Amelia Benner. Alumni are also frequent contributors. In the past year, the Magazine has published stories written by Nancy Steele Brokaw '71, Mac McCormick '04, and Anna Deters '05, as well as current student Rebecca Welzenbach '07.
"IWU Magazine is the product of many individual's efforts," said Obermiller, "and so is this award. It was really gratifying to know that our news about this great university and its alumni is making a favorable impression, not only among our campus constituents but in the eyes of the CASE judges who chose us for this honor."
