IWU School of Music to Host New Music Cafe

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan School of Music will present the next installment
of the New Music Cafe on Thursday, March 16, at 8 p.m. in the Westbrook Auditorium
of Presser Hall (1210 Park Street, Bloomington).
The event is free and open to the public.
The New Music Cafe series features student and faculty performances of new compositions
that capture musical elements from the early 20th century to the present.
Opening the program will be "Composition for Jazz Ensemble," composed by Professor
of Composition Theory and Director of the School of Music Mario J. Pelusi and performed
by the Illinois Wesleyan Jazz Ensemble.
"Desmodus Rotundus; or, Night of the Full Blue Moon" composed by Adjunct Instructor
in Music Garrett Byrnes and performed by Deborah Boersma, a senior orchestral instruments
major, on flute, will follow.
"Night Songs on Poetry of Quentin Smith" will be next in the program, composed by
Lee Scott Price, a 2003 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University. Performing the
piece will be soprano vocalist Sara Price, a 2003 IWU graduate; Daniel Monge, a senior
orchestral instruments major, on French horn; and Sean Parsons, adjunct instructor
of music, on piano.
"Three Pieces for Piano" composed by Adjunct Professor of Music Theory Ed Martin and
performed by Ji-Eun Yun, a current Doctor of Musical Arts student at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, on piano, will follow.
"Her Name" and "Ethology" will continue the program, composed by Parsons and performed
by Philip Krawchuck, a senior orchestral instruments major, on bass; Stephanie Lyon,
a junior music education major, on drums; and Parsons on piano and as a vocalist.
The concert will conclude with Professor of Composition and Theory David Vayo's musical
setting of Jim McGowan's poem "Little Venice, Mykonos." McGowan, a former IWU English
professor who retired in 2000, was awarded the 1980 and 1984 Illinois Arts Council
Award for his poetry. Performers will be Bob Mangialardi, adjunct instructor in music,
as the vocalist; Lisa Nelson, adjunct instructor in music, on violin; Molly Price,
a freshman music major, on viola; Nina Gordon, associate professor of cello and chamber
music, on violoncello; and Vayo on piano.
