IWU Professor Receives Accounting Education Award

April 12, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan University Professor of Accounting Gerald Olson was awarded the 2006 Award for Promoting Diversity Through Accounting Education by the Illinois Certified Public Accountants Society.

In addition to his wide involvement in IWU accounting classes and his performance in the classroom, Olson was nominated for this award because of his Accounting Leaders of Tomorrow (ALOT) program.  Employed at IWU since 1986, Olson founded the ALOT program to target Chicago high school juniors and seniors who are interested in the accounting profession.

The first session of the ALOT program was held in 2005 and was sponsored by State Farm Insurance, Caterpillar, Inc., PricewaterhouseCoopers and the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois.  During the week-long summer program, students visit organizations such as State Farm Insurance and Caterpillar Inc., listen to speakers on campus, participate in a business simulation and attend workshops on topics including applying to college and time management.  The purpose of the program is to draw more students to the accounting profession and help them along the path to a career in accounting, starting with college.
