IWU Professor Receives Saddlebag Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -  Illinois Wesleyan University's Robert Bray, R. Forrest Colwell Professor of English, has be en selected by the Historical Society of the United Methodist Church to receive the first annual Saddlebag Award for his book, Peter Cartwright, Legendary Frontier Preacher.

Bray will sign books and receive the award at the annual meeting of the Historical Society of the United Methodist Church, Thursday, Sept. 21, in Harrisburg, Pa.  The award honors the best book published in 2005 on United Methodist history, biography, polity or theology.

The book, published by the University of Illinois Press, recounts the life of the famous Middle Western circuit rider Peter Cartwright, who is famous in civil histories as the Democratic nominee for Congress defeated by Whig opponent, Abraham Lincoln in 1846.
