University Chapel Hour to Present "Divine Rhythms," an Indian Classical Dance Performance
February 6, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan's University Chapel Hour and Special Events
and Services will present Uma Vyjayanthimala Kallakuri, a teacher at Bloomington's
Nrityamala Dance Academy, in "Divine Rhythms," an Indian classical dance performance
on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. in Evelyn Chapel (1301 N. Park St., Bloomington).
The service is free and open to the public.
Kallakuri performs and teaches both Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dances, two unique
types of Indian classical dance. She has achieved ranking as an 'A' grade artist for
Doordarshan TV Network in India and has performed extensively in India, Japan, Oman,
Dubai and the United States. Kallakuri has also published research-oriented articles
on dance in various magazines and newspapers.
India offers a number of unique classical dance forms, including the Bharatnatyam,
the Kathakali, the Mohiniyattam, the Odissi and the Kuchipudi. Each of these dance
forms is connected to a different area of the country and represents the culture and
ethos of that region or group of people.
