IWU Lab Theatre to Present Le Bourgeois Avant-Garde

November 22, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan University's School of Theatre Arts will present Le Bourgeois Avant-Garde, Charles Ludlam's radical postmodern interpretation of the classic Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Moliere, Dec. 6-10 at 8 p.m. in the E. Melba Johnson Kirkpatrick Laboratory Theatre (304 E. Graham St., Bloomington).

Directed by Sara Freeman, assistant director of theatre arts at IWU, Le Bourgeois Avant-Garde is the story of Mr. Foufas, a "new money" simpleton who, spurred on by his interest in the lovely young actress Maia Panzaroff, tries to culture himself by becoming a patron of radical and avant-garde art.  With the help of his artsy advisors, Mr. Foufas attempts to woo Maia while concealing his indiscretions from his wife and snoopy maid.  Meanwhile, against his will, Mr. Foufas's daughter wants to marry the next door neighbor.

Ludlam's works, considered some of the most important texts in the postmodern stage tradition, are said to be high-energy theatrical collages that blend disparate elements into hilarious, unexpected combinations.
